BMW is well known for its domination in the automotive industry especially when it comes to vehicle designs. This year, the company came up with another concept car that is strikingly appealing in appearance and style. Vision ConnectedDrive Concept was introduced in the Geneva Motor Show on March 1 and with this, BMW is setting another mark in the history of the automotive industry when it comes to technology.

What attracted my attention with this new concept was the ability of the car to find information in real time. The ‘Parkinfo Function’ would simply be very useful in congested parking not only in Malaysia but all other countries. One of the basic problems that motorists face in everyday routine has been identified by BMW and acted to provide solution. The system works this way – the car will scan the parking area in advance, identifying which space is vacant and relaying the information to the driver before hand. Exactly what we need from a car during times where finding a parking space could be difficult.

BMW is known for using ‘Head Up Displays’ as already incorporated with their models such as X5, X6 and others. But with Vision ConnectedDrive Concept, BMW has developed this feature’s ability. Fuel consumption information, Speed and Navigation is now displayed on the windscreen. This allows the driver to focus his attention on the road ahead while receiving all these information without taking his eyes off the road. This gives convenience to the driver and more safety.

The specifications for the power source of the new concept car were not revealed by BMW at the moment. But it would most probably be Hybrid or Electric Vehicle. Nevertheless, the most important information and which the company gave more emphasis on this vehicle was ‘Connectivity’. Connected driving is one of the key areas in the future and BMW is one of the pioneers in this field.

As a BMW Electrical Technician from the 90’s, I would say this car manufacturer truly has led the way to new innovations in the automotive industry. From E-28, E-36 and E-29 models up to the latest X3, X5 and X6. Sadly this concept car will not make it to the production line. This means, we will not see this car on the road in the future as announced by BMW. But the technology and innovations on this car will be the basis for future models of BMW. J
