Aftermarket grounding cables: Do they really work or are they just mere psychological and visual improvements to our cars?

To tell the truth I am one of those believers that if such cheap gadgetry could really make significant impact to vehicles, surely car manufacturers with their fatter R&D budget would have already done so before rolling out the finish products.
