The newest subcompact vehicle from Chevrolet called the Chevrolet Sonic or “Sonic” was recently launched at the Bukit Jalil National Aquatic Center. The Sonic is available as both a four-door sedan and a five-door hatchback, giving it a presence in the highly competitive B-segment. The Sonic promises a far superior refinement, plus better safety, and higher performance. It is also one of the safest, especially among value-leading compacts when compared to other vehicles of its size and price class. This vehicle shows a lot of soul with fresh styling, agile driving dynamics and a spirited engine.

Both sedan and hatch are powered by a 1.4 litre Ecotec engine which produces 100bhp and 130Nm of torque at 4000rpm, mated to a 6-speed tranny for both automatic and manual. This enables the Sonic to have a top speed of 175km/h and 0-100km/h in 12.9 seconds. Fuel economy is recorded at 8.1L/km. For the sedan, it is 360mm longer than its hatch counterpart, and also comes with a 466 litres boot space (253 litres for the hatch).

The most affordable hybrid car in Malaysia just got cheaper! The Honda Jazz Hybrid is now available in CKD form (built in Malaysia, being the first hybrid car produced in Malaysia), priced at RM89,900. It’s a RM5k reduction compared to its CBU counterpart, which was previously the lowest priced hybrid car in Malaysia.

The CKD has up to 10% locally sourced parts and the figure is expected to increase gradually in the future. The same 1.3 litre iVTEC + IMA powerplant is used for the Jazz CKD. Minimum changes have been implemented to the exterior of the Jazz Hybrid CKD. Note the slightly different taillight cluster in the CKD compared to the CBU’s (see below).

The latest batch of crash test results has been released by Euro NCAP. This round of crash tests consists of 15 cars, all gaining a maximum of 5 stars except for the Dacia Lodgy, a MPV which only received 3 stars out of 5. It is sad to say that the Dacia Lodgy performed below average, more notably as it is an MPV and safety is important in protecting the lives of its occupants.

On frontal impact, the A-pillar deformed greatly and the roof was bent in front of the B-pillar, showing weakness in its structure’s integrity. The rear passenger floor panel and tunnel are separated too, and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) is not made standard for the Lodgy. For reference, cars without ESC on 85% of the models sold will not be awarded a maximum of 5 stars by Euro NCAP.
