Chrysler Comes Third in Average Union Pay
Compared in 2006 where every average employee of Chrysler is paid more than $75 an hour, the staggering amount of hourly rate received by the Chrysler’s employees has dropped a much lower rate of just $49 an hour last year, according to the numbers that Chrysler Group posted on its official website this week. The $49 figure has benefits and wages included, and it gives Chrysler an edge over its own Detroit rivals: General Motors and Ford. Ford announced this week that its workers are paid for an hourly rate of $58 an hour.
Meanwhile, General Motors is paying its workers about $60 an hour, according to a General Motors spokesman as quoted by The Wall Street Journal. Chrysler even revealed this week that it has done some ‘trimmings’ in the work force by at least two-thirds during the last decade. In 2000, Chrysler had employed 75,489 hourly and salaried workers. That number had eventually dropped to just 25,549 in 2010. While the number of hourly workers had plunged from 69,058 in 2000 to 22,789, Chrysler had also shut down about 16 of its plants during the period.
With Chrysler’s dropping number of hourly workers, its salaried workers are not spared as well, with the Chrysler’s salaried head count dropped from 6,431 in 2000 to a much lower 2,580 in 2009, which is the year of Chrysler’s government-supported bankruptcy. As Chrysler was struggling with declining sales during the onset of global recession back in 2007-2009, the auto company offered large numbers of its salaried staffer buyout packages. As Chrysler began hiring again under Fiat management, the salaried staff rose slightly to 2,760 in 2010. Chrysler has a four-year contract with the UAW which expires on September 14th 2011.
