Door protectors – awkward looking rubber things that I reckon not even a team of Apple designers can make to look good. You know what they are, those ugly rubber things people stick at the edge of the doors to protect from contact with other solid objects and scratching the paint. For that, it is a necessary evil – serving a great purpose but so foul looking that an ugly stick to beat it with does not exist.
But a colleague (that I’ve never met, incidentally) from evo UK posted this video about a very nifty feature in the new Ford Focus. It’s an automatic rubber door protector that pops out only when the door is opened and goes hiding as you close it. Clever little thing and looks good. Henry (Catchpole, the voice in the video) reckons that it’s such a delight – in the same way that you can find an umbrella in a Rolls’ doors (apparently the Skoda Superb too but I never noticed that…intrigue); or massage functions in car seats. To me, cooled seats also fall into this list, what with our hot weather and all.
Anyway, the video below shows you how it works. Like I said, very clever. So I wonder if it’ll be part of the Ford Focus that’s due to be launched here. Mind you, this door protector is still a £50 option in the UK but I think it’s worth it.
