Porsche’s Leipzig plant is growing and gearing up for production of the new Porsche Macan. For more than seven months, architects and building experts have been working flat out on expanding the production site. It is the biggest building project in the history of Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, which is investing a total of 500 million euro in the construction of a body assembly line and a paint shop.
In case anyone has forgotten, the Macan is the name given to Porsche’s newest sports car – but that’s in Porsche’s lingo; it is actually a sports car in the SUV segment. The name is derived from the Indonesian word for tiger and combines the animal’s qualities of suppleness, power, fascination and dynamics as the core characteristics of the new vehicle.
As the fifth Porsche model line, the Macan is a central plank of Strategy 2018, by which the sports car manufacturer wishes to expand its model portfolio. Porsche intends the Macan to emulate the success of the Cayenne. The SUV will start coming off the production lines in Leipzig in 2013. To that end, the new facility will include body assembly lines and paint shop. In the medium-term, the sports car manufacturer will be creating more than 1,000 new jobs to complement the new factory.
