When renowned Italian car maker Fiat introduced the Fiat 500 back in 2007, many critics did not take favorably to the vehicle. Five years on and 770,000 vehicles sold later, the critics have been made to eat their words as the Fiat 500 proved that it is indeed one of the most popular compact cars in production today. It even penetrated the North American market, where compact vehicles are not at all popular. The compact vehicle certainly has left its mark, not it is the turn of its five-seater counterpart that will make its debut fairly soon, first in Europe before heading out to the other continents.
The five-seater hatchback will be called the Fiat 500L, the L meaning large. But in terms of dimensions, the 500L will only be slightly longer than the Fiat 500, to be accurate 60mm longer. Indeed it will be interesting to find out how Fiat adds a row of rear seats by adding simply 60mm extra, I guess we will find out when the Geneva Motor Show kicks off later this year. The Fiat 500L will be unleashed under the code name of L-Zero, and this hatchback certainly looks like a winner from the images that came across over the last few weeks!
The 500L will be made available from July 2012 onwards for the European market, and shortly after that, Fiat will unveil the seven-seater variant of the same car! Looks like Fiat is certainly riding on the success of the Fiat 500, and want to take full advantage of the excellent sales number of the compact vehicle. The Fiat 500L is expected to come with Fiat’s TwinAir Turbocharged engine (probably the 900cc variant that produces 85bhp of power), as well as its 1.4-litre petrol engine and 1.3-litre diesel engine. The latter two engines are expected to come in two different tunes each, thus you should have five different output levels to choose from altogether.
Keep your fingers crossed to have this brilliant set of wheels to be brought across the sea to our shores!
