Nitro Boosts

August 31, 2010 by Joanna · Leave a Comment

As seen on racing themed movies such as ‘The Fast and the Furious’ or on more local shores, ‘KL Drift’, nitro boosts can be used to speed up the performance on engines for added acceleration and top speed. The way this works is to introduce boosts of bottled nitrous oxide gas into the engine to increase power.

Although the nitrous oxide gas itself is not flammable, it delivers more oxygen than regular air by breaking down at elevated temperatures, allowing the engine to burn more fuel and air. Additionally, since nitrous oxide is stored as a liquid, the evaporation of liquid NO in the intake manifold causes a large drop in intake charge temperature. This results in a smaller, denser charge, and can reduce detonation, as well as increase power available to the engine.

This sort of nitrous oxide systems, known as NOS in the car modification circle, consists of basically the bottled nitrous oxide gas, or canisters, as well as a form of input rigging to the engine, allowing the gas to be injected into the engine manifold, as shown below. Read more

To Be Safe

As we move forward through the years, safety features in cars play an important role in our decision-making. The standards have changed. Before, such abbreviations like ESP or ABS are unheard of, but today, having them would be a blessing in disguise.

While it is a bonus to be rated by Euro NCAP and get rewarded with it’s gold stars, it is not really a big deal here. At least not yet. The objective for such a test like this is to equip car buyers/owners with full awareness regarding the safety benefits offer to them and their families.

Even though at the end of the day, it all depends on how we react and control when facing a situation, at least the danger is minimised. That way, we can have no qualms when driving in heavy rain or unforeseen circumstances. Read more

World’s Longest Traffic Jam

China holds the record for many things, the longest wall, the most populated country and the list goes on. Now it looks like they’re going to bag another title – the longest traffic jam. The venue is part of the Beijing – Tibet National Expressway 100, in China’s Hebei province. Already the 12th day as I’m writing this, the congestion has stretched past the 60miles (100km mark).

Apparently, road works and huge volumes of trucks are said to be the cause of this ruckus. At one point vehicles were moving a mere half mile a day.

Even so, there are a handful of people raking in profits out of the situation. Local villages on motorbikes are selling items at hiked up prices to the stranded drivers. It was reported that a bottle of water normally costing 1 yuan was sold for 10 yuan, while the selling price of a usual 3 yuan cup of instant noodles have tripled.

Meanwhile, authorities have mobilized hundreds of policemen to clear the backlog.

Lancer Unleashed

Taking the Mitsubishi on a test drive was an experience, one for the book. I have to say the Lancer is definitely built with one thing in mind; Brutal Speed.

Design (exterior)
It is an eye catcher, isn’t it? Especially in that blood red paint work of it. The color of Mitsubishi Ralliart… I love the front grill. It has one of those ‘Rear view mirror thrillers’ if you know what I mean; You see that grill on your rear view mirror, you’d want to move over and let it pass you. Although the rear portion of the car is a little bulky, (only in my opinion of course) but it suits the overall build of the car! It’s ver rare to see the car without it’s famour rear wing and to be quite honest I don’t think it will look nice either.

The Benefits and Drawbacks of GPS Car Security Devices

With the emergence of GPS-based devices meant for the tracking of vehicles, car security applications have been elevated to a whole-new level, especially for used cars that are slightly behind in terms of vehicle security! Utilizing strategically placed satellites, once you have a GPS-enabled tracking device kept in your car, regardless of which part of the world your car is taken to, you would be able to locate it fairly easily.

This system, like every other system around us today, comes with its own sets of advantages and disadvantages. Let us first look at its advantages, as listed below:
1) There is no need to worry about not being able to locate your car anymore, even when thieves manage to steal your car. You would be able to retrieve your car as you can track it down regardless of where your car is taken to
2) The device is extremely compact, and easy-to-install. It is usually kept in a secret, hidden location so that car thieves would not be able to find it and disable it in the event of a theft
3) World-wide acceptability, your car can be in any part of the globe, and you still be able to track it down

What does a spoiler actually do?

August 26, 2010 by Joanna · 1 Comment

We’ve all seen modified cars on the road, with large exhaust pipes and mufflers, huge shiny sport rims, and most importantly front and rear spoilers, which give these cars a futuristic ‘pimped-out’ look. So besides contributing immensely to the aesthetics of a car, do these spoilers actually contribute any worthwhile improvements to the car?

To answer this question, we need to first take a look at how spoilers actually function and how they improve a car’s aerodynamics.  As we can see in the picture below, what spoilers do is to actually ‘spoil’ unfavorable air movement across the surface of a car in motion, which is the cause of friction and wind resistance. Rear spoilers function to direct airflow appropriately around the outer surface of a car in order to reduce drag and resistance, while front spoilers have the added function of preventing aerodynamic ‘lift’, keeping the car firmly rooted to the ground.
