Understanding Tire for Dummies (LIKE ME)
I am not ashamed to admit that I do not know much about the meaning of the number at the tires of my car. Sometimes I just nod every time my mechanic starts to explain about my tires especially when I am changing it or changing the rim of my car. For me it is not important, but I am wrong, so now I am sharing with those who are less educated about tires as I am, YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
How will this information does you? Believe or not by knowing the meaning or the details will help each and every one of us to decide on the best and suitable tires for our car and suitable tires help in reducing oil consumption in which help in reducing our cost for petrol / oil.
For example:
175 / 70R13 82H
- 175 = Refer to the width in millimeter, distance between side to side. The bigger the number means the wider the tires.
- 70 = Aspect ratio of the tires or the height of the tire compared to width of the tire. Example, the height of the tire is 70% of the width of the tire. Tire with the ratio aspect of 55 is classified as low profile tires. This tire provide a better whole handling performances but may affect a bit the comfort aspect.
- R = The build of the radial tire. Radial tubeless tire provides a better performance.
- 13 = The rim diameter. Changing tire with a bigger diameter, a rim with the same diameter is required.
- 82 = The index of load range. It symbolizes the maximum weight that a tire can withstand. E.g.82 = 475 Kilograms x 4 tires = 1900kg.(Refer to The Standard Load Inflation Table)
- H = The maximum speed that the tire is designed for 210km/hour. (Refer below)
- S – 180km/hour
- T – 190km/hour
- U – 200km/ hour
- H – 210km/hour
- V – 240km/ hour
- Z – over the speed limit of 240km/hour
- W – 270km/hour
- Y – 300km/hour
- ZR – Over the speed limit of 270km/hour.
