When driving in rainy days there are two aspects that should be taken into consideration, the vehicle itself and the steps taken during driving.
The vehicle / The car
- Ensure that the vehicle / the car are in tip top condition.
- Check for leakage under the vehicle as well as for the engine, gear box, piston and bearing, to avoid water from coming in. Water in the engine or any parts mention above will cause damage of extensive cost.
- Ensure that all doors have proper seal
- Ensure clutch, brake and handbrake are working properly.
- Check the condition of the tire threads to ensure grip, worn out tires are dangerous during rainy days.
- Make sure also the wiper, the horn and the electrical system such as the headlight are working properly.
- Carry along a portable car starter. The car can be start inside instead of outside in the rain.
Steps during driving. (Going through flooded streets)
- Give way to a heavier vehicle so that you can estimate the height of the water before passing through a watery puddle.
- Of the level of the water is below one feet, driver has to drive slowly to avoid any splashes to the engine especially the ignition system.
- Avoid accelerating because it may increase the possibility of water getting into the engine and it is dangerous to other road users such as motorcyclists and pedestrians.
- Heavy flooded road also affect the breaking system in which the break system are not fully function on wet surfaces. For this situation, below are the advisable steps.
- Use gear 1 and 2 for manual car and gear 1 for automatic.
- Press on the brake and the gas pedal simultaneously to generate heat on the surface of the brake.
- For 4 wheel drive, the automatic gear is similar to manual. Limit the speed between 5 – 15 km/hour and distant your vehicle from the vehicle in front. This process will dry up the surface of the brakes.
- Test the action above repeatedly in the distant of 20 – 30 meters only.
- Test the brake system at the speed of 20km /hour.
- If the brakes fail to function, repeat the above process until the performance of the brakes are satisfactory before accelerating.
Be safe on the road in any condition.
